Project Background
The City's Public Works Department was created in the first few years following merger of Hudson's former Village and Township. The City secured leased space on Georgetown Road for Public Works in 1999. The divisions operating out of the Georgetown facilities include street maintenance, signs, storm water maintenance, water distribution, fleet services, and administrative support. Hudson Public Power, a division under Public Works, originally was housed at the Owen Brown Street location and since has moved to a facility on Hudson Drive.
Plans for a New Public Works Facility
Since 2016, the City has been exploring plans to combine all Public Works operations and storage yards into one single structure for greater efficiencies including tangible financial and operational benefits. It would address inadequate and dysfunctional work and storage spaces as well as provide a high-quality work environment. A combined, City-owned facility would:
Increase efficiencies in having all the PW operations, equipment, vehicles, and materials and supplies under one roof at one location. This eliminates cross-town travel multiple times a day by multiple vehicles resulting in increased time and fuel efficiencies, as well as wear and tear on equipment and vehicles. Under-roof storage also will help extend the life of City equipment and vehicles.
Meet employee and visitor needs with modern design standards make work areas more accessible and sustainable into the future.
Offer the opportunity to design, construct, and install energy saving technologies such as solar PV generation and EV charging stations for a reduction in utility and fuel costs and environmental offsets, including contributing to the reduction of the City’s peak electrical load which saves all HPP customers money on their utilities. A new vehicle wash system will help extend vehicle and equipment lifecycles.
Use Hudson utilities as instead of First Energy and Akron Water for Public Works operations.
Use modern interior designs and functionality that will increase employee satisfaction and result in higher attendance and productivity rates. Modern designs also offer space flexibility, open breakout space, and adaptability for future needs.
Offer an opportunity to plan for the future in terms of internal and external space and functionality.
Provide the acreage necessary for current Public Works and HPP needs, and allow for future expansion as needed.
After viewing several potential site locations over the course of many years, the City has selected a location at 5431 Hudson Drive and is the process of purchasing the land to build a new combined Public Works facility.
Cost Estimates
The estimated cost of construction is approximately $20 million.
Conceptual Plan & Timeline
The City has created a Conceptual Plan for combining the Public Works and Hudson Public Power operations on the selected site. Once the purchase is approved by Hudson City Council, the design of the new facility would take place in 2023 - 2024, with construction occurring in 2024 - 2025.
