Comments are now closed for the Leadership Hudson Public Art Installation. Thank you to everyone who submitted comments for the 2024 Class project! Based on the feedback, alternate locations will be studied. Updates later this year to be posted.

City Council recently received a proposal for a public art installation that would be donated to the City. The tentative design is the word ‘HUDSON’ in white, 3D block letters. The art piece is currently proposed to be located at the corner of the Park Lane Green (at the intersection of 303/91). Council discussed that locating the art at this corner could create an optimal photo opportunity, with downtown Hudson visible in the background.

City Council is seeking public input to gauge the level of community support for this project and to understand any suggested design changes the community may have. What are your thoughts on the following?

  • Do you like the proposed Park Lane location (corner of 303/91)?
  • Do you like the 3D letters?
  • Do you like the all-white coloring?
  • What would you change about the design, if anything?

Share your thoughts below!

Project History

City Council received the current design proposal from Leadership Hudson Class of 2024. Leadership Hudson is a program offered through Hudson Clocktower Rotary that encourages participants to develop a project that will economically or educationally benefit the Hudson community. The Class of ’24 is proposing an art installation to promote civic pride and increase foot traffic to businesses by further activating the public greens.

The Class of ‘24 is proposing to design, build, and donate a public art installation to the City of Hudson. The proposal was initially presented to City Council at the July 23, 2024 meeting. View the meeting here: https://hudson.granicus.com/player/clip/4354?meta_id=460114(External link).

Please take this opportunity to review the design and provide your thoughts below.

  • Share I have strong concerns about the proposed location for this art installation. I do not believe the style is conducive to the historic Green areas. I have been involved in many activities/events located on the Clocktower Green, Gazebo Green and Park Place Lane. The City has always been extremely protective of what they allow on these precious areas of our community...and rightfully so. I believe we should preserve and protect these areas and not allow commercial type art such as this to detract from the historical beauty of our downtown. I also believe the extensive efforts to protect the Baldwin Buss House from disrepair and restore it to its original beauty should be respected. The Baldwin Buss House should not have the distraction of a large 3D White HUDSON sign on its front green space. I believe there are other locations in the community that would be just as accessible and prominent for this art design, while not destroying the beauty of our historic Greens. Why not locate it on First & Main area or in one of our Park locations? I truly hope the Leadership Hudson Class of 2024 and Hudson City Council will reconsider this proposal and create another location for this art project. on Facebook Share I have strong concerns about the proposed location for this art installation. • Share I don't think this project makes sense for Hudson in any way. Hudson has beautiful, classic New England architecture and a well-maintained historic district. The design does not represent the heritage of our past or the strength of our present commitment to a cohesive community image. on Facebook Share I don't think this project makes sense for Hudson in any way. • Share I do not approve of the location of the art installation on the Historic Green of Hudson. This has always been a priority in our town to keep the integrity of our Historic town center. The fact that the “sign” is made of white plastic, in block letters, is anything but historic. Please don’t destroy our quaint, historic, Green. on Facebook Share I do not approve of the location of the art installation on the Historic Green of Hudson. • Share I grew up in Hudson, kindergarten through 12th grade. My parents retired and moved away when I was out of college. I live nearby and I'm in Hudson a lot and I am against this artwork in the center of town. I don't think it is at all attractive and I don't see the reason for wanting to place this in the historical district. As a frequent visitor to Hudson and a patron of many of your stores and restaurants, I say no. on Facebook Share I grew up in Hudson, kindergarten through 12th grade. • Share I love the idea of this project! I'm hesitant on the color (white could look very dirty, very quickly, depending on what this is made of), but I like it being 3-D and I definitely like the location being Park Lane or somewhere else fairly central. The point is for visitors to the city to use it as well as residents, so it should be somewhere visible to the general public, not tucked in a park off the beaten path. I do wish it had a clocktower silhouette on it too, but that might be too costly. I love the photo op publicity this can bring to the city. • Share Such an art installation would clash with the unique character and historic beauty of Hudson. The town’s charm lies in its preserved architecture, heritage, and small-town aesthetic. It feels out of sync with this backdrop and not in line with what long-time residents and visitors alike cherish. This current "art" and the shiny bird located on the same plot of the Green do not complement but conflict with the our town’s historic narrative. on Facebook Share Such an art installation would clash with the unique character and historic beauty of Hudson. • Share I am ALL for public art and I think the Leadership Class is on to a fantastic (and generous!) idea…. Unfortunately public art is especially difficult because it can be so subjective. I personally think that the “Hudson” text is too derivative of what has already been done in a number of other cities. Perhaps bringing in an outside public art consultant (like Gregory Peckham with Cleveland’s Land Studio) could provide some additional perspective? Forgive me if one already exists... maybe this could be the genesis of Hudson's own public art commission / committee? I can't think of a better way to help fill those empty storefront spaces downtown! on Facebook Share I am ALL for public art and I think the Leadership Class is on to a fantastic (and generous!) idea….
